GERDLING MOM MEMBER: KATY
Welcome to another GERDling Moms website.
Katy's 5 year old son Noah has suffered horribly from infant reflux, or more
accurately GERD (Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease), since his birth.
He has undergone the Nissen Fundoplication three times already in an attempt
at better controlling his GERD and providing the poor child some
much needed relief from his daily pain.
Katy joined GERDling Moms because she
shares the same goal as the other GERDling Moms, to help others
survive and to raise awareness about infant reflux and pediatric GERD.
It is estimated that at least fifty
percent of all newborns (up to 85% of premature babies) are born
with some degree of reflux. While it's true that most of these
babies outgrow their condition within the first few months of life
and many do not require medical intervention for their reflux, there
are a percentage who do not outgrow it and are really bothered by
their reflux. There are also many who suffer dreadful complications
and do not respond to even the most aggressive treatment. Noah
is one of these children.
They
are suffering from the more serious condition called Gastro
Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) and the complications include, but
are certainly not limited to, severe food and oral aversions, long
term tube feeding, weight loss, failure to thrive, esophagitis,
asthma, wheezing, apnea, anemia, pneumonia, ALTE (apparent life
threatening events), erosion of dental enamel, developmental/speech
delays and Barrett's esophagus (pre-cancerous condition).
